    Hi all

The TI/A draft is finally out and you are all invited to contribute.

The policy behind the recommendation was driven by the attempt to find a good tradeoff between sustainability and cost of conversion.

Based on the analysis in some Swiss archives (2.5 Milion files) some compressions (LZW, Fax Group 4, even new JPEG) are not allowed. If you oppose, speak up, please!

Compression Analysis on 3.9 Mio existing TIFF files in Swiss archives

In collaboration with Swiss Federal Archive and its Coordination Committee for sustainable archival of digital documents (KOST, kost-ceco.ch) and thanks to the effort of Martin Kaiser I would like to present this table to you all.

It shows the amount of files of the Archive of Basel, Swiss Federal Archive (BAR) and St. Gallen which sum up to 3.9 Million TIFF files and give a good frame to the discussion of compression. Thanks to the KOST this figures exist for the first time.

I would like to comment on the results of Lukas' recent evaluation. Esspecially I would like to focus on the results of the photometric interpolation and compression.

Some of the values of both tags might stand for proprietary software. Allthough the evaluation results show no images in this perticular archive, we cannot conclude, that there aren't any such files in other archives.

As you allready might know we are presently evaluating TIFF files in three swiss archives. Lukas recently posted the evalulation results of the Basel Staatsarchiv. In collaboration with the swiss federal KOST (Coordination unit for sustainable archiving of digital documents) we are presently evaluating the TIFF file collections of the cantonal archive of St. Gallen and the Swiss federal archives. While the first one comprises less than a million files and is still ongoing the collection of the federal archives has 870'000 files which are now scanned.
