TIFF Baseline Plus Proposal

In a recent meeting with adobe and the ISO technical committee, after a presentation of the problem an a follow-up discussion, a consensus has been reached about the name and the way of a standardization of the TIFF/A idea.
Instead of a new file format we will develop a recommendation which standardizes the use of existing TIFF Baseline Standard taking into account digital preservation.
The
"recommendation for the use of TIFF in archival environments"
will be based on the TIFF 6.0 specification of June, third, 1992.
It will define extensions of the specification, for example LZW compression will be allowed, and it will define limitations of the specification, for example the now obsolete older JPEG compression.

The next steps are to discern formal requirements of the documentation and then to write that documentation incorporating feedback from the community. Therefore, please let us know of any new aspects that should be in the proposed recommendation.

What are your thoughts about this?

For those of you who have already posted their thoughts and inputs here, thank you again for your feedback,
and of course I will include what I can in the document, no need to post the same things again.

This could be excellent. Getting the cooperation of Adobe and ISO will certainly make a big difference, compared with a proposal that can't use TIFF in its name.

The risk is that Adobe will push aside the preservation aspect in favor of other considerations (as with PDF/A-3). Hopefully this won't happen.

Hi Gary

Thank you for your feedback. I am optimistic that things will turn out all right.

Thanks Marisa.

Is the planned submission still on for March of this year or has it been delayed?

Besides, I won't be surprised if the forbidden name sticks in folks mind. BTW Sears Tower has been renamed Willis Tower...people still remember and call it Sears Tower...No pun intended to Adobe by Humpty Dumpty who thinks a "thing" is what he chooses to call it! "Die Gedanken sind frei!, Wer kann Sie erraten, Sie flihen vorbei..."

Hi Tibaut

We would like to wait for the results of the KOST analysis, so I think it will be delayed, but I will check with the others.
